Indians trade Perez, recall Garko

CLEVELAND, OH --- The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has traded 1B EDUARDO PEREZ to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for INF ASDRUBAL CABRERA. Cabrera has been assigned to AAA Buffalo and 1B RYAN GARKO has been recalled from AAA Buffalo to assume Perez' spot on the Major League roster.

Cabrera, 20, has spent the entire season at AAA Tacoma where he has hit .236 (48-203) with 27RS, 12 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR & 22RBI in 60 games. Cabrera did not make an error over his first 36 games (165TC) and currently ranks first among Pacific Coast League shortstops w/a .986 fielding percentage (291TC, 4E).

The native of Venezuela, who was signed by the Mariners in 2002 as a non-drafted free agent, was a Mid-Season All-Star selection at A Everett (NW League) in 2004 and at A Wisconsin (Midwest League) in 2005. In 2005 he was voted the best defensive second baseman by Midwest League managers and was named the 6th best Mariners prospect by Baseball America. He hit a combined .295 (130-440) in 2005 over 3 stops in the Mariners system and owns a career minor league batting average of .277 (299-1080).

Garko, 25, has spent the entire season at AAA Buffalo where he has hit .255 (70-275) with 16 2B, 11 HR & 49 RBI in 78 games for the Bisons. He currently leads the team in RBI (49) and walks (33) and over his last 7 games he was 8 for 26 (.308) with a HR & 5RBI. Garko, who made his Major League debut last September, wears #25 and is seeking his first hit and RBI at the big league level.

Perez hit .303 (30-99) with 9 2B, 8HR & 22 RBI in 37 games with Cleveland after signing a Major League Free Agent contract in the off-season.
