CC Sabathia and the Yankees compete off the field in campaign to improve America's communities

Purchase, N.Y. -- The Yankees along with 14 clubs across Major League Baseball are asking fans to join them in making a difference in America's communities. As part of the Pepsi Refresh Project, each Club has outlined an idea it is passionate about and will vie for fan votes and an ultimate $200,000 Pepsi Refresh grant to fulfill the project. Fans have until Tuesday, August 17 at 11:59 p.m. EDT, to cast their votes at www.mlb.com/PepsiRefresh or via text by typing the team name "YANKEES" to 76462 for the ideas they believe should receive a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project.

CC Sabathia and the Yankees are looking to assist with the efforts of Out2Play, which is dedicated to building and refurbishing playgrounds throughout the New York City public school system. Out2Play has built more than 80 playgrounds throughout the five boroughs since 2005, providing tens of thousands of New York City school children with safe, fun and developmentally beneficial playspaces where they can engage in physical activity. The non-profit 501(c)(3) organization has built 46 playgrounds in the Bronx alone, and would use the $200,000 Pepsi Refresh grant to build additional playgrounds at public schools throughout the five boroughs.

Prior to tonight's 7:05 p.m. Yankees-Royals game, Andrea Wenner, Executive Director of Out2Play, will participate in an on-field pre-game ceremony with Sabathia to launch the Yankees campaign and encourage fans to vote for the Yankees and Out2Play. In addition, the first 18,000 fans in attendance at tonight's game will receive a Yankees Insulated Can Cooler, courtesy of the Pepsi Refresh Project.

The Pepsi Refresh Project is a groundbreaking effort to foster innovation in social good that will award more than $20 million this year to fund great ideas that help impact the world. Throughout 2010, Pepsi will fund ideas that will move the world forward in six categories: Health, Arts & Culture, Food & Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods and Education. The Pepsi Refresh Project, which launched January 13, features significant social engagement around people and the power of ideas. People are encouraged to submit their ideas and to cast a vote for their favorite ideas at www.refresheverything.com.
