Oakland KO's Colon, Angels 03/06/2004 6:38 PM ETBy Mychael Urban / MLB.com
PHOENIX -- The A's jumped all over Bartolo Colon and pounded a parade of Angels relievers Saturday, knocking the new Anaheim ace out in the first inning on the way to their first victory in Cactus League action. Eric Chavez had four RBIs in the first two innings and Mike Rose hit a grand slam for one of Oakland's six homers in a 26-3 drubbing in front of 9,241 fans at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Making his debut in an Angels uniform, Colon allowed a leadoff walk to Mark Kotsay, a single to Billy McMillon, a two-run double to Chavez and walk to Jermaine Dye before recording an out. He was replaced by Tim Bittner with two out in the inning, and Bittner didn't fare much better for the Angels (1-1). The A's (1-2) scored three more runs in the second, two of them coming on an opposite-field single by Chavez, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Kotsay, who went 2-for-2 with two walks, also had an RBI single in the second, and Oakland continued to pad the lead in the sixth with five runs off non-roster Angels reliever Eric Cyr and one off Derrick Turnbow. Cyr gave up a solo homer to Mark Ellis to open the inning and walked Esteban German with the bases loaded and one out before getting the hook himself. Dye greeted Turnbow with a two-run single, and Erubiel Durazo followed with an RBI single of his own before Eric Karros' sacrifice fly closed out the rally. Nick Swisher's mammoth two-run homer off Turnbow in the seventh gave Oakland a 13-3 lead, and German chased Turnbow with a double. Jason Grabowski welcomed reliever Pete Zamora with another two-run homer, and four batters later Rose cleared the bases with a blast that just cleared the wall in center field. Eric Byrnes added a solo homer in the seventh off Richard Fischer, who also served up a two-run shot to Graham Koonce. Mike Edwards made it 25-3 with a two-run double in the eighth, and Mike Rouse closed the scoring with an RBI single. Joe Blanton, a 23-year-old righty who split last year between Single- and Double-A in the A's organization, started for Oakland and allowed three hits over two scoreless innings in his first-ever Cactus League appearance. The Angels scored their runs in the sixth off A's prospect John Rheinecker, getting a two-run single by Robb Quinlan and an RBI single by Brian Specht. Mychael Urban is a national writer for MLB.com.
