SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced the following roster moves today:

• RHP Doug Fister selected from AAA Tacoma.
• LHP Jason Vargas optioned to AAA Tacoma.

With these transactions, the Mariners currently have 38 players on the 40-man roster. Fister will wear #58 for the Mariners and will be active for tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He will be making his Major League debut when he appears for the Mariners.

Fister, 25, has spent most of the season with AAA Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League. He is 6-4 with a 3.81 ERA (45 ER, 106.1 IP) in 22 appearances, 17 starts. He has walked only 11 batters and struck out 79 in 106.1 innings. Over his last seven appearances (6 GS), Fister is 3-3 with a 2.74 ERA (13 ER, 42.2 IP).

Fister was originally selected by the Mariners in the 7th round of the 2006 June Draft out of Fresno State University. In four seasons in the Mariners organization, he has compiled a career 23-31 record with 308 strikeouts against only 100 walks.

Vargas, 26, is 3-6 with a 5.08 ERA in 16 appearances, 14 starts for the Mariners this season. He started and lost his last start Thursday in Kansas City (7.0 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 0 K), allowing 5 runs in the first inning. He will be making his third stint with Tacoma, where he is 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA (9 ER, 27.2 IP) in five starts.
