Save for a quiet April (.200 AVG), Teixeira delivered everything an owner could hope for in his inaugural season in the Bronx. Having adjusted to life in pinstripes, and with the Yankees certain to provide plenty of protection again, the switch-hitting slugger is fully capable of matching this effort in 2010.
Teixeira faces an uphill battle for AL MVP honors, with teammate Derek Jeter and the Twins' Joe Mauer clogging his path. But he will finish the season with close to 40 homers, more than 120 RBIs and an average near .300, barring a late slump.
Teixeira has been his usual All-Star self in the second half, including a .386 run since Sept. 5. He has compiled 17 extra-base hits with 19 RBIs in that time frame to help him take the AL RBI lead at 120.
Teixeira had his second multi-homer game of the month and seems primed to reach 40 homers for the first time since 2005. He could reach 40 during the Sept. 21-23 three-game series vs. the Angels at Angel Stadium, where Teixeira nailed eight of his 13 homers as a member of the Angels in the second half of the 2008 campaign.
Whether he's hitting or slumping, Teixeira remains a premier source of run production, thanks to protection from the likes of Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon. The switch-hitting first baseman leads the AL with 111 RBIs.
Tex might only be hitting .267 this month, but as is usually the case with the mashing first baseman, his version of .267 carries more weight than most. Despite the pedestrian average, Teixeira has left the yard three times, knocked in eight and scored 10 runs in September.
Teixeira has three homers in as many games, providing reason to think he could reach 40 blasts for the first time since he slammed 43 for the Rangers in 2005. Working in his favor is the fact that the Yankees play 14 of their final 23 contests at the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium, where Teixeira has slugged 22 of his dingers.
Teixeira has struggled somewhat of late, and is just 4-for-26 (.154) over his last seven games, but he remains so potent a slugger -- and so adept at getting on base -- that he's a boon to fantasy owners even when his box scores look like near-total busts. Despite his recent struggles, Teixeira remains on pace to launch 40 homers.
The Yanks plan to rest their regulars down the stretch to stay fresh heading into the postseason. "I think guys see that when they do get a day off, a lot of times they come back stronger and it does benefit them," Girardi said. There was a thought that Posada benefited from resting to nurse a bruised left thumb last week, as he belted two homers in Tuesday's 9-6 victory over the Orioles.
Teixeira, who went deep for the second time in 11 games and 11th time in 42 contests since the All-Star break, notched his sixth consecutive 100-RBI season. The big first baseman has knocked in 101 runs to lead the American League.
Friday was Teixeira's second straight day of driving in three runs, after going four games without any RBIs while slumping to the tune of 2-for-15. All in all, it puts him one step closer to the century mark in ribbies, with 92.
Teixeira's 31 homers lead the AL, his 89 RBIs rank second, and he continues to contribute at MVP-caliber levels in all categories. He's as valuable to fantasy owners as he is to the Yankees, and that is truly saying something. While he's just 6-for-26 (.230) over his last seven games, Teixeira still contributes so much that it's hard to quibble with the occasional o-fer.
Teixeria's steady march to the 100-RBI plateau soldiers on. The Bronx Bomber has pummeled opposing hurlers in August, socking four dingers, plating 11 runners and even flashing a razor-sharp eye at the dish, drawing an even 9/9 BB/K ratio. As he's proved time and time again, Tex can beat you in many ways.
With a 5 ½ game lead in the AL East, skipper Joe Girardi said he would rest some of his veterans during the next week and Teixeira is the first beneficiary. Eric Hinske started in right field and Nick Swisher filled in at first base for Tex, who’s batting .286 with 29 home runs and 84 RBIs this season.
Teixeira is crushing the ball in August, hitting .353 (12-for-34) with three doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs in just eight contests. He's a career .316 hitter in August, so expect more performances like the one on Sunday.
