NEW YORK -- As Derek Jeter walked back to the Yankees clubhouse after his face-first collision with the left-field seats in the 12th inning on Thursday night, Joe Torre heard words that have become all-too-familiar.

"I'm all right."

That's what Jeter told his manager, right before he was taken to a local hospital for X-rays on his bruised cheek, and to have his lacerated chin and bruised shoulder checked out as well.

Jeter's injuries came on an incredible play, one that saved the game for the Yankees, who went on to beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, in 13 innings, completing a three-game sweep.

"He leaves his heart on the field every single night," Torre said. "That's why I say that a lot of his stuff doesn't show up in statistics. You have to watch him to appreciate why he's up there with all those guys who have better numbers than him. What he does translates into victories and championships, and that's pretty damn special."

Boston had runners at the corners with two outs in the 12th, when Trot Nixon lifted a fly ball to shallow left field. Jeter ran the ball down near the foul line, catching it before diving head-first into the stands.

"It's the greatest catch I've ever seen," said Alex Rodriguez, who was just feet away from Jeter at the time. "It was unbelievable, he's so unselfish, putting his body in compromising situations. It was hard to watch."
