Pedro debuts on Wheaties box

BOSTON -- If Wheaties is the Breakfast of Champions, look for the Red Sox -- led by Pedro Martinez -- to be playing well into October.

That's because a new Wheaties box featuring Pedro Martinez, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, was unveiled Tuesday night before the Red Sox hosted the Orioles at Fenway Park.

The package will be available nationally beginning next week.

The Dominican-born Martinez pulled a cord, unfurling a 30-foot banner depicting the box cover in front of the Green Monster in a pregame ceremony.

"The small man gets the big box," the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Martinez said.

The cover shows Martinez in his gray Red Sox uniform in mid-delivery, viewed as one would see him from the first-base side of the field, while the back of the box features a "Training with Pedro" section explaining how Martinez prepares for the season. Martinez also appears on one side of the box displaying his trademark fist pump as he looks to the sky.

Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin and Ted Williams are among previous Red Sox to have appeared on the Wheaties box.

"It's a great honor," Martinez said. "The previous guy to do it for the Red Sox was Ted Williams, so I'm very happy and very honored to be part of it."

One component of the honor that didn't thrill Martinez quite as much, however: seeing himself as he eats breakfast in the morning.

"I might not feel the same appetite," he said.
