Markakis tracks down Play of the Week honors

July 15th, 2019

A game-saving catch by the Braves’ Nick Markakis on Saturday at Petco Park was recognized as the first Play of the Week presented by W.B. Mason of the second half, MLB announced Monday.

Markakis’ grab in Atlanta's 7-5, 10-inning win Saturday in San Deigo earned the Braves their first Play of the Week honor in the inaugural season for the award.

After the Braves took the lead in the top half of the 10th, Markakis tracked down a deep fly ball to right field by Francisco Mejia and made a leaping catch at the peak of the wall. With runners at first and second, Markakis robbed Mejia of extra bases and likely saved Atlanta multiple runs.

“In that situation of the game, you’re all in,” said Markakis, who crashed into the wall after making the play.

“I knew if it stayed in the park, he’d catch it,” teammate Tyler Flowers said. “He seems to find a way to crawl up walls and run into them and catch it. It was either game over or the second out.”
