Cleveland's Ryan Drese named AL May Rookie of Month

Ryan Drese of the Cleveland Indians, who was 3-1 with a 3.44 ERA in five games started in May, was voted American League Rookie of the Month.

Drese, 26, struck out 24 and walked only eight in 34.0 innings pitched. The rookie right-hander pitched six innings or more in each of his five starts, including an eight-inning, one-run effort in Cleveland's 4-1 victory over Kansas City on May 18. Drese struck out 10 and walked one in that start.

Other outstanding rookies last month to receive consideration were: Bobby Kielty of the Twins (.345, 7 RBI, .472 OBP), Eric Hinske of the Blue Jays (7 HR, 17 RBI, .500 SLG), Rodrigo Lopez of the Orioles (2-1, 2.70) and Ramon Santiago of the Tigers (.308, 10 R).

Drese will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
