Blue Jays' Josh Phelps named AL Rookie of the Month

Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Josh Phelps, who led all Major League rookies with seven home runs and 30 RBIs last month, has been named the American League’s Rookie of the Month for August.

Phelps, 24, batted .310 (31-for-100) with 18 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, a .590 slugging percentage and a .361 on-base percentage in 28 games. He posted nine multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games in August. Phelps batted .500 (8-for-16) with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs as the Blue Jays took three out of four games from the New York Yankees from Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at SkyDome, including the first two-homer game of his career this past Thursday.

Other outstanding rookies who received consideration were: Baltimore’s Jorge Julio (1-0, 0.68, six saves); Anaheim’s John Lackey (4-1, 3.71); Joe Crede (.247, 7 HR, 16 RBIs) of the Chicago White Sox; Kansas City’s Jeremy Affeldt (2-0, 3.71, 17.0 IP, 15 SO) and Scott Mullen (1-1, 1.35, 15 G, 13.1 IP); Detroit’s Mike Maroth (2-3, 3.95, 41.0 IP) and Carlos Peqa (.245, 7 HR, 14 RBIs); and Toronto’s Eric Hinske (.289, 2 HR, 13 RBIs), Orlando Hudson (.304, 3 HR, 12 RBIs) and Justin Miller (2-0, 2.89).

Phelps, who also received consideration in the voting for AL August Player of the Month, will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
