Blue Jays' Josh Phelps named AL Rookie of the Month for September
Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Josh Phelps, who hit .338 and led all Major League rookies with six homers in September, has been named the American League’s Rookie of the Month for the second consecutive month.
Phelps went 26-for-77 with 15 runs scored, 10 doubles, a .701 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage in 21 games. Despite not playing in six games last month, he posted seven multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games in September. Phelps hit safely in 17 of the 21 games he played in as he helped lead the Blue Jays to a 19-8 record during the season's final month.
Phelps' teammate Mark Hendrickson and Joe Crede of the Chicago White Sox were the runners-up in the Rookie of the Month voting. Hendrickson went 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA in five September appearances, including four starts, while Crede hit .337 (32-for-95) with five home runs and 19 RBI for the month.
Other outstanding rookies who received consideration were Seattle's Willie Bloomquist (.464, 10 runs scored, 5 RBI), Minnesota's Bobby Kielty (.250, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Boston's Casey Fossum (3-1, 2.89 ERA).
Phelps will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
