Endy Chávez of the Expos named NL Rookie of the Month for September

Montreal Expos outfielder Endy Chávez, who hit .337 and led all NL rookies with 29 hits in September, was named National League Rookie of the Month for September.

Chávez played in 22 games, recording 30 hits in 89 at-bats, including five doubles, four triples and a home run. He drove in nine runs while scoring 16, and compiled a slugging percentage of .539 and an on-base percentage of .362. He had a 16-game hitting streak from Sept. 10-27, which was the second-longest hitting streak by an Expos’ rookie, behind only Pepe Mangual, who hit in 18 straight in 1975.

After making a brief appearance with the Expos in May, the 24-year-old Venezuelan won the International League batting title as a member of the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx with a .343 average.

Coming in a close second in the rookie voting was San Diego’s Sean Burroughs, who hit .377 with four RBIs. Other rookies who received votes were: Mets’ Ty Wigginton (.358, 4 HR, 11 RBI); Cubs’ Bobby Hill (.284, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and Carlos Zambrano (2-2, 1.93 ERA); Cardinals’ Jason Simontacchi (2-0, 2.60 ERA); Astros’ Jason Lane (.298, 4 HR, 8 RBI) and Brandon Puffer (2-0, 1.17 ERA); Expos’ Brad Wilkerson (.212, 8 RBI) and Sun-Woo Kim (1-0, 0.89 ERA); Rockies’ Denny Stark (2-1, 3.93 ERA); Braves’ Damian Moss (3-1, 4.81 ERA); Padres’ Jake Peavy (1-1, 3.72 ERA); and Brewers’ Jayson Durocher (0.00 ERA, 12.2 IP).

Chávez will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
