San Diego Padres Xavier Nady named National League Pepsi Rookie of the Month for May
Xavier Nady of the San Diego Padres, who batted .320 with four home runs and 15 RBIs, was named the National League Pepsi Rookie of the Month for May.
The 24-year-old outfielder was 33-for-103 with seven doubles and 15 runs scored in May. He led all NL rookies in hits, home runs, RBI, and was tied for first in runs during the month. Nady currently ranks among the leaders in several NL rookie categories with 59 hits (1st), 92 total bases (1st), .284 batting average (2nd), seven home runs (T-1st), 23 RBI (T-1st) and 30 runs (2nd).
Nady is only the third player in Major League Baseball history with a name that starts with "X," after Xavier Hernandez and Xavier Rescigno. Nady became the first player with a name that starts with "X" to hit a Major League home run, when he hit his first career homer on April 2. His seven home runs is the fewest of any letter in the alphabet.
Other rookies receiving votes were Montreal's Luis Ayala (4-0. 0.84 ERA); Florida's Dontrelle Willis (3-1, 3.72 ERA) and Tommy Phelps (2-0, 1.61 ERA); Houston's Brad Lidge (1-0, 2.25 ERA); Colorado's Javier Lopez (12 IP, 0.00 ERA); and Milwaukee's Scott Podsednik (.291, 2 HR, 7 RBI).
Nady will receive a specially designed award to commemorate his NL Pepsi Rookie of the Month performance.
