MLB to launch Dominican Republic drug-testing program
In response to reports of steroid abuse by baseball players in the Dominican Republic, Major League Baseball today announced it would begin a drug-testing program for the Dominican Summer League with all players being subject to testing when the league commences in June.
"Major League Baseball has worked with Fernando Mateo and his organization, Hispanics Across America, to address the issue of steroid abuse among baseball players in Latin America," said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. "To achieve our goal of zero tolerance of performance-enhancing substances and drugs of abuse, it is important to prevent the use of these substances in the earliest stages of a player's career."
