Boston's Kevin Youkilis wins American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis, who scored an American League rookie-high 15 runs in his first 13 Major League games in May, has been named the AL Pepsi Rookie of the Month for May.

Youkilis, 25, batted .318 (14-for-44) with four doubles, one home run, and seven RBI after being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on May 15th. His nine walks and .446 on-base percentage were highs among AL rookies. In his Major League debut, on the day he was recalled, he collected two hits, including a solo home run in a 4-0 Boston win over the Toronto Blue Jays at SkyDome. On May 30, continuing to fill in for injured reigning AL batting champion Bill Mueller, he had three hits and three runs in a 9-7 win over the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park. The two-time All-American at the University of Cincinnati drew 213 walks in 293 games as a minor leaguer and, in 2003, tied the modern minor league record by reaching base in 71 straight games for Double-A Portland and the PawSox. Youkilis, an eighth-round choice in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, is the first Red Sox to win AL Pepsi Rookie of the Month honors, which began in 2001.

Other rookies who excelled in May were Red Sox right-hander Anastacio Martinez (2-0, 1.69 ERA); Toronto's Jason Frasor (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 saves); Shingo Takatsu (3-0, 0.00 ERA) of the Chicago White Sox; Oakland's Bobby Crosby (.261, 4 HR, 10 RBI) and Justin Duchscherer (2-0, 1.06 ERA, 17.0 IP, 17 SO); Chicago's Ross Gload (.268, 2 HR, 10 RBI); Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera (3-1, 4.15 ERA); and Anaheim's Kevin Gregg (1-0, 2.12 ERA, 17.0 IP, 16 SO).

Youkilis will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month.
