Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week

San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who led the N.L. in six offensive categories, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for July 17-23, 2006. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Gonzalez led the league in batting average (.607), slugging percentage (.964), on-base percentage (.645), hits (17) and total bases (27) and was tied for the league lead in runs (9). The San Diego native added two home runs, four doubles and five RBI over the week. Adrian tallied at least one hit in all seven games he played and is currently in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak. Over that time he has hit .450 (27-60) with seven home runs and 16 RBI. The left-handed hitter had four three-hit games, including a two-homer performance on July 17th at Philadelphia, to help lead the Padres to first place in the N.L. West.

Other nominees included Garrett Atkins (.409, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Clint Barmes (.417, 21 HR, 3 RBI) of the Rockies; San Francisco's Ray Durham (.320, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and Omar Vizquel (.379, 2 2B, 4 RBI); Miguel Batista (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 CG, 2 SO), Luis Gonzalez (.458, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and Orlando Hudson (.407, 1 HR, 6 RBI) of the Diamondbacks; Atlanta's Wilson Betemit (.348, 1 HR, 7 RBI), Andruw Jones (.375, 2 HR, 7 RBI), Chipper Jones (.444), Adam LaRoche (.421, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Brian McCann (.316, 3 HR, 7 RBI); David Bell (.550, 4 R) and Jimmy Rollins (.478, 2 HR, 3 RBI) of the Phillies; New York's Carlos Delgado (.300, 3 HR, 8 RBI), John Maine (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 SHO, 4 SO) and Xavier Nady (.353, 2 HR, 4 RBI); Joe Borowski (1-0, 2.25 ERA, 3 SV) and Ricky Nolasco (2-0, 0.63 ERA, 11 SO) of the Marlins; Washington's Alfonso Soriano (.375, 2 HR, 3 RBI); Jim Edmonds (.263, 4 HR, 6 RBI) and Juan Encarnacion (.500, 2 HR, 4 RBI) of the Cardinals; Milwaukee's Prince Fielder (.524, 3 RBI) and Tomo Ohka (1-0, 2.07 ERA, 10 SO); Scott Hatteberg (.412, 1 HR, 3 RBI) of the Reds; and Chicago's Aramis Ramirez (.304, 5 HR, 6 RBI).
