A year ago today: Trea the hero, Nats get 1st win

Turner belts two homers, including walk-off blast

March 31st, 2020

To help fill the baseball void, we’re flipping the calendar back one year to remind us all just how awesome our great game is. Here's a look back at the best of March 31, 2019:

By the end, they'd be the last team standing in 2019. But their first victory of the season came on March 31, when they beat the Mets behind a huge game from Trea Turner. The Nationals won, 6-5, with Turner belting two homers, including a laser over the left-field wall at Nationals Park to win it in the ninth. It was the second of 19 homers Turner would hit despite suffering a broken index finger on his right hand after being hit by a pitch the very next game.

Little did Washington know the trials it would face over the next two months before going on a sizzling run that ended with the franchise's first World Series title. Turner missed 39 games due to the broken finger, but returned and played without having it operated on, still going on to slash .298/.353/.497 with 35 steals for the year.

But things all started with those two homers and the four runs Turner drove in during that first win, launching what became a most memorable season in the nation's capital.

Best of the rest:

Yelich makes more history: Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich continued his red-hot start by launching his fourth home run, becoming the sixth player in MLB history to homer in each of the first four games of the season. He capped off his big day with a walk-off double to lift the Brewers to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals. Though he'd miss the final month of the regular season with a knee injury, Yelich would top his MVP numbers from the prior year, leading the Majors with a .671 slugging percentage and 1.100 OPS, and hitting a career-high 44 homers.

Giolito begins bounce-back season in style: White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito, a heralded prospect who struggled to a 6.13 ERA while giving up an MLB-high 118 earned runs and 90 walks in 2018, began a spectacular 2019 campaign with 6 2/3 strong innings against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on March 31. He walked one and struck out eight, not yielding a hit until there was one out in the seventh. In 29 starts, he posted a 3.41 ERA and 32 percent strikeout rate, tying for the MLB lead in both complete games (three) and shutouts (two).

Paddack makes stellar debut: Padres right-hander Chris Paddack made a huge impression with a great spring and forced his way into San Diego's starting rotation. He backed up his spring success in his first career start, giving up one run on two hits, walking one and fanning seven in five innings to help the Padres beat the Giants, 3-1. Overall, he made 26 starts in his rookie campaign, finishing with a 3.33 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
