A wild ninth inning vs. Cards closer Jason Isringhausen wasn't enough to rescue the Phillies from a costly eighth in which the bullpen allowed St. Louis to score three runs on just two hits. David Bell and Jason Michaels each knocked in two runs.

The Cards were in a 5-1 hole in Mark Mulder's NL debut, but kept chipping away. It all came together in the eighth, when a bases-loaded walked to Larry Walker tied it, and another to Albert Pujols put the Cards ahead. David Eckstein reached base five times.
