A's finally alone at the top

Francisco Rodriguez dropped a routine return throw from the catcher, allowing the A's to score the winning run from third. Paul Byrd shut out the A's for six innings, but Brendan Donnelly couldn't protect a four-run lead in relief. Vladimir Guerrero homered and Steve Finley knocked a two-run double in the loss.

Down, 4-0, in the seventh, Jay Payton and Eric Chavez hit a pair of homers to tie it up, and Jason Kendall scored the winning run on a bizarre error in the ninth. The win spurred the A's to sole possession of first place in the AL West for the first time all year.
