Cliff Floyd homered in his third straight game to put the Cubs ahead, and Daryle Ward hit what proved to be a critical three-run double in the ninth as the Cubs pushed the Cards six games back and extended their lead to 1 1/2 over Milwaukee. Carlos Zambrano motored through eight for win No. 16.

Albert Pujols' first homer since Aug. 22, spanning 75 at-bats, tied the game late, but the Cubs pulled too far ahead that even a stirring ninth-inning rally couldn't save St. Louis. Jim Edmonds and Ryan Ludwick homered in the ninth, but the Cards lost their eighth straight and fell six games out of first.
