NEW TO THE STAFF: Rangel (pronounced rahn-HEL) was hired as pitching coach on November 16, 2018, and will be in his first season as a major league coach…the 43-year-old Panama native has 12 years of experience as a pitching instructor and coordinator at the minor league level with the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians. 

SAN FRANCISCO: Served as the minor league pitching coordinator in his lone season with San Francisco in 2018, a position in which he worked closely with then-VP of player development David Bell, who has since been hired as new Reds manager. 

CLEVELAND: Worked in both pitching instruction and offfield education with the Cleveland Indians from 2007-17… his minor league roles there included time as Assistant Field Coordinator (2016-17), Lower Level Pitching Coordinator (2011-15), Mental Skills Coordinator (2009-10), and Cultural Development Coordinator (2007-08)…served as an interim pitching coach with Triple-A Columbus in the Cleveland system in 2012…while with the Tribe, Rangel implemented player development initiatives at the Indians' new Dominican academy and oversaw the player development and day-to-day operations of the academy…served as a coach for the Tampa Yankees in 2001. 

PLAYING CAREER: Signed by the Yankees as a 17-year-old in 1993 and spent his entire seven-year professional career in the Yankees farm system…reached as high as Double-A during his last season with the Yankees in 2000…Rangel also appeared in 2 games with Berkshire in the independent Northern League in 2002. 

PERSONAL: Julio Cesar Rangel…resides with wife Vanessa, daughter Alexa, and son JC in Clearwater, Fla… played for Latin America in the 1988 Little League World Series as a 3rd baseman…spent time in banking during a hiatus from the game from 2002-06.
