Was selected by Pittsburgh in the 18th round of the 1989 draft...Played 11 seasons in the minor leagues for Pittsburgh (1989-97), Atlanta (1998) and Arizona (1999)...Was the recipient of the Ed Hales Award in 1996 and 1997 while playing at Double-A Carolina and the John M. Zwickau III Memorial Award while playing at Triple-A Richmond in 1998.....both are awards recognizing his involvement in the community.


Is married.....wife's name is Jill.....the couple has twin daughters, Ashley and Grace, and two sons, Nathan and Levi...Is a 1989 graduate of Racine (WI) Horlick High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball.....his baseball uniform number (32) is retired...Was nicknamed "Koos" in high school due to the way his mother (who is German) would pronounce his first name as "Markoos"..... his father was also born in Germany...Runs a charitable organization called "Koos For Kids" that helps terminally ill and disadvantaged youths in Southeastern Wisconsin...Talents include the ability to hold up to seven baseballs in one hand...Is the Citizens Bank Park record holder (June 2015) for the most Philly cheesesteaks consumed in the visiting team clubhouse over three (18) and four (23) consecutive days • Is an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers.
