MANAGING/COACHING CAREER: In his second season as the Mariners' big league hitting coach, but his third in the organization…Mariners hit .262 with runners in scoring position in 2014 after hitting .228 in 2013...Spent 2013 season as hitting coach at Triple-A Tacoma prior to joining big league club for month of September…Before joining Seattle, spent 11 seasons in a variety of capacities with the New York Mets organization; coached or managed in their minor league system for six seasons (2001-2006), then spent four seasons (2007-2010) on the MLB staff…Worked in the Mets scouting department from October 1997 through 2001.

PLAYING CAREER: Originally selected by Detroit in the 1st round (12th pick) of the 1979 amateur draft (January Secondary)…over a 14-year Major League career, posted a .249 batting average with 247 doubles, 22 triples, 228 home runs, 760 RBI and 231 stolen bases in 1,531 career games with the Tigers, Mets, Rockies and Cubs…was part of the 1984 Detroit Tigers and 1986 New York Mets World Championship teams…in 1987, became the second infielder in Major League history to register a 30-30 season after hitting 36 home runs and stealing 32 bases; accomplished the feat again in 1989 (36 HR, 41 SB) and 1991 (38 HR, 30 SB)…named to his first All-Star Game in 1989; picked as starting third baseman for the NL after Mike Schmidt, who had led the fan voting, announced his retirement…also played in the 1991 All-Star Game…led NL in home runs (38) and RBI (117) in 1991; was the first switch-hitter to lead the NL in home runs.
