Play Ball!

At Jays Care, we know that there are countless organizations across Canada with dedicated youth workers and volunteers who lead impactful programs for marginalized children. Play Ball! is a program designed for those who dream about introducing baseball to the children and youth in their programming but are unable to afford equipment to make that dream a reality. Aligned with an initiative launched in 2015 by Major League Baseball, Play Ball! is an equipment distribution program designed to increase access to the equipment and tools required to lead great baseball programs for children and youth facing multiple barriers.

Play Ball! recipients will receive:

  • A full baseball equipment kit suitable for the children and youth they serve
  • The opportunity to attend a one-day baseball for development dynamic workshop facilitated by Jays Care staff
  • Access to program resources such as activity manuals and session plans
  • The opportunity to apply to have Jays Care staff visit your program to lead a baseball clinic
  • Additional cool contest opportunities exclusive to Play Ball! recipients!

Play Ball! kits will be available to organizations who meet the stated criteria on a first come, first served basis.

Who is eligible to apply for Play Ball!?
Play Ball! is open to non-profit and charitable organizations, as well as schools working with under-served children and youth in Canada.

Are there any costs associated with being a Play Ball! partner?
Play Ball! kits, staff workshops, resources, clinics and contests are all offered at no cost.

What kind of equipment can I expect to receive?
Play Ball! kits include all of the essential baseball equipment needed to lead a great program - bats, gloves, balls, tees, bases and an equipment bag. Jays Care works with recipients to ensure the equipment provided is appropriate for the ages and skill levels of the children and youth you are working with.

Are there any responsibilities for the recipient?
At Jays Care, we understand that baseball programming can take place in many forms. We have two requirements of all of our recipients:

1. We ask that all organizations who receive Play Ball! kits implement at least 2 hours of weekly baseball programming per week for a minimum of 8 weeks. Baseball programming can be:

  • stand-alone programs (i.e. baseball leagues); or
  • integrated into existing school programs (i.e. as part of an after school program or a summer camp).

2. We ask all recipients to complete a standard impact report within 6-months of receiving the equipment.

How are successful candidates selected?
Successful candidates will be notified within two weeks of submitting their Play Ball! application. Candidates will be selected based on:

  • Their eligibility;
  • Their demonstrated need;
  • Their baseball programming implementation plan; and
  • Their ability to fulfill the reporting requirements.
