Infielder Joey Curletta claimed off waivers by Boston
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that Mariners minor league infielder Joey Curletta has been claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox.
Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 38.
Curletta, 25, appeared in 26 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, batting .245 (26x106) with 15 runs scored, 1 double, 5 home runs, 10 RBI, 9 walks and 1 stolen base. He was added to the Mariners 40-man roster on Oct. 31, 2018 after being named the Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League Hitter of the Year by the Seattle Mariners.
Curletta hit .282 (131x465) with 70 runs scored, 24 doubles, 23 home runs, 94 RBI, 1 HBP, 81 walks and 1 stolen base in 129 games with Double-A Arkansas in last season. He was named Texas League Player of the Year while also being named to both the Texas League midseason and postseason All-Star teams. Curletta set career highs in nearly every offensive category, while also ranking among the Texas League leaders in RBI (1st, 94), walks (1st, 81), OPS (2nd, .865), on-base percentage (T2nd, .383), home runs (T3rd, 23), slugging percentage (5th, .482), extra-base hits (T6th, 47) and games played (7th, 129).
Curletta was acquired by Seattle from Philadelphia in exchange for SHP Pat Venditte on March 12, 2017. He was originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 6th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, AZ. He was traded by Los Angeles (NL) to Philadelphia on Sept. 15, 2016 as a PTBNL in a deal that sent Carlos Ruiz to the Dodgers. In parts of 8 minor league seasons, he is batting .263 (691x2626) with 357 runs scored, 161 doubles, 8 triples, 83 home runs, 412 RBI, 20 HBP, 303 walks and 33 stolen bases in 724 career games.
