ANAHEIM -- Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons left Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Giants with a right forearm contusion after being hit by a Johnny Cueto fastball. He is listed as day-to-day. X-rays were negative.
"Got a little bit of the bone, but mostly muscle," Simmons said. "It numbed me a little bit. … There's nothing I could've done about it. It was on me. I tried to slow down [my swing], try to ease the pain that was coming."
Simmons was injured in the bottom of the second inning, when Cueto's 95 mph pitch hit his right forearm. Simmons stayed in the game after being examined by manager Mike Scioscia and Angels medical personnel. As soon as the inning ended, Simmons favored his arm as he went back into the dugout to get his gear, and continued his discussion with medical personnel and training staff.
Simmons turned a double play in the next inning, but continued to examine and stretch out his arm while in play.
"It was a little sore," Simmons said. "It was a little hard to throw. I could do it, but not easily."
The discomfort was enough for the team to decide to remove him from the game. Jefry Marte took his spot in the lineup, taking first base, and Luis Valbuena switched from first to third and Zack Cozart from third to shortstop.
Simmons said that he wanted to stay in, but the coaching and training staffs eventually advised him against it.
"We took him out as a precaution," Scioscia said.
The remedy now? Not much besides icing it, Simmons said.
"Just wait for the swelling to go down," Simmons said. "It's a little sore but not that bad. I think it should be ready to go [on Monday] if they let me."
The Angels start a three-game series against their AL West rival, the Houston Astros, on Monday.
