Angels add depth with veteran infielder Rodriguez

ANAHEIM -- The Angels signed veteran utility infielder Luis Rodriguez to a Minor League contract with a Spring Training invite on Monday.

Rodriguez is a 32-year-old switch-hitter who hit .238 with a .314 on-base percentage while slugging .324 in 407 Minor League games from 2005-11. The native of Venezuela, listed at 5-foot-9, spent 2012 with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, batting .296 with a .389 on-base percentage, 12 homers and 51 RBIs in 102 games.

This spring, Rodriguez will compete with in-house candidate Andrew Romine and Minor League signee Brendan Harris for the backup-infielder spot vacated by Maicer Izturis. Adding Rodriguez makes up for the loss of Angel Sanchez, who was plucked by the White Sox in the Rule 5 Draft.
