The Angels have agreed to terms on a 2019 contract with RHP Cody Allen. In a corresponding move, RHP Miguel Almonte has been designated for assignment. Sunday's announcement was made by General Manager Billy Eppler. The veteran reliever has averaged 70 games, 29 saves and a 3.03 ERA across the last five seasons. Allen's 147 saves since 2014 lead the American League.
Allen, 30, spent his seventh MLB season with Cleveland in 2018, becoming the club's all-time saves leader (149) while adding to his previously set career club records of relief appearances (456) and relief strikeouts (564). For the 2018 campaign, he recorded 27 saves (6thin A.L.) in 32 chances with a 4.70 ERA (67 IP - 35 ER) and .231 average against in 70 relief outings (33 BB, 80 K, 11 HR). 52 of his 70 appearances were scoreless and he posted 15 straight save conversions May 19-July 15.
2018 represented the fifth straight season Allen notched at least 24 saves (also a CLE record), and he is just one of three MLB relievers (Craig Kimbrel & Kenley Jansen) with at least 25 saves in each of the last four seasons (2015-18). Allen's 149 total saves, including a career high of 34 in 2015, are ninth-most among active players. For his career, he boasts a 2.98 ERA (440.2 IP - 146 ER), .217 average against, 10.5 K/9 IP and a 1.19 WHIP in 456 games (all in relief).
A native of Orlando, FL, Allen has appeared in the postseason in each of the last three seasons and in four campaigns overall (also 2013). In 17 career playoff games, he owns seven saves (seven chances) with a 3.10 ERA in 20.1 IP (7 ER). He logged 30 saves and a 2.94 ERA for the A.L. Central champions in 2017 and collected 32 saves (35 chances) and a 2.51 ERA during Cleveland's 2016 run to the World Series.
Allen was drafted by Cleveland on two occasions: 16th round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft from St. Petersburg College (did not sign) and in the 23rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft from High Point University (NC).
