Angels agree to terms with RHP Ryan Madson

ANAHEIM, CA – The Angels today agreed to terms on a 2013 contract with free agent reliever Ryan Madson. Today’s announcement was made by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

“We are thrilled to have Ryan on board,” said Dipoto. “His pedigree as a Major League reliever is unquestionable, and his experience in championship situations will be a big boost to our bullpen.”

Madson, 32, signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds last January 13 but did not appear with the club during the 2012 campaign after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery April 11.

Across nine big league seasons with Philadelphia, Madson has posted a 47-30 career record with 52 saves and a 3.59 ERA (630 IP – 251 ER). He ranks third on the Phillies’ all-time games pitched list with 491, trailing only Hall of Famers Robin Roberts (529) and Steve Carlton (499).

His finest season came in 2011, when he assumed the Phillies’ closing duties and registered a 4-2 record with 32 saves and a 2.37 ERA (60.2 IP – 16 ER). In 33 career postseason appearances, Madson holds a 2-1 record with two saves, a 2.31 ERA (35 IP – 9 ER) and 43 strikeouts.

A native of Long Beach, CA, Madson currently resides in Temecula, CA. He is a 1998 graduate of Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, CA.
