BALTIMORE -- When the Angels return home Friday, manager Joe Maddon is unclear who will start on the mound. Three of the Halos' starters have been placed on the injured list without distinction -- as Reid Detmers and Austin Warren on Wednesday joined Jose Marte, who was placed on the IL on Sunday.

“There are some things going on, I can tell you that,” said Maddon, when asked about his upcoming pitching plans. “But I really can't comment more deeply than that. So we're still trying to figure things out.”

After Wednesday's 10-6 loss, Maddon was asked again about what his plan was for the starting rotation with so many members on the injured list. While nothing has been confirmed by the team, the skipper was asked about how he thinks the Angels are handling everything and if there is a potential COVID-19 outbreak.

"I have no idea," said Maddon. "The virus is one of those things that nobody can see. Obviously, nobody's immune. Getting vaccinated is the most important thing, obviously. I want to believe -- we want to believe -- that we're doing the protocol things correctly. And with that, you hope that -- I don't like to use the word hope, but I think in this situation it matters. So, hopefully, we got everything under control. But we'll know more in the next couple days."

In the flurry of roster moves, which also included Dylan Bundy being added to the 10-day IL with a right shoulder strain, Los Angeles has selected the contracts of right-hander Elvis Peguero -- the organization’s No. 24 prospect, per MLB Pipeline -- and veteran right-hander Jake Petricka.

The skipper had high praise when asked about what Peguero could add to the team, comparing him to Marte. The rookie uses both his sinker and slider, mixed with his size, to get guys out -- owning a 2.79 ERA in the Minors this season.

“It’ll be very interesting to get him in here and get him an opportunity,” said Maddon. “Perry [Minasian, GM] has been very excited about him and he's told me he's been throwing really well. He could put the ball on the ground. He could get a strikeout.”

Minor matters
In Double-A, outfielder Orlando Martinez has been slugging. The past week (Aug. 16-22), he’s batted .458 with two homers and seven RBIs. That performance earned him the title of Double-A South Player of the Week.

The Angels’ No. 27-ranked prospect smacked 11 hits in a seven-game span, earning the distinction for the first time in his career. He first signed with the club as an international free agent on Aug. 30, 2017, working his way up through the Minor Leagues.

So far this season, Martinez is slashing .259/.311/.461 with 15 home runs. His 22 doubles rank as the second most among Double-A South players. He sits in the top 10 in a few other offensive categories: hits (87, 4th), home runs (15, tied-7th) and RBIs (47, tied-7th).
