Angels add Marcus Thames, Phil Plantier to coaching staff

November 7th, 2022

The Angels are close to finalizing their coaching staff for the 2023 season, as they hired Marcus Thames as their hitting coach, Phil Plantier as assistant hitting coach and Bill Hezel as assistant pitching coach, the club announced on Monday.

Third-base coach Mike Gallego, assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti and assistant hitting coach Paul Sorrento are being reassigned within the organization, while pitching coach Matt Wise, bench coach Ray Montgomery, first-base coach Damon Mashore and catching coach Bill Haselman will remain in their current roles. The Angels parted ways with hitting coach Jeremy Reed and assistant hitting coach John Mallee on Oct. 19, and they still need to determine who will be their third-base coach.

Thames, 45, joins the Angels from the Marlins where he served as their hitting coach for one season. He was also an assistant hitting coach with the Yankees from 2016-17 and their hitting coach from 2018-21. He played parts of 10 years in the Majors with the Yankees, Rangers, Tigers, and Dodgers from 2002-11.

Plantier, 53, served as the Padres' hitting coach from 2012-14 and coached in the Yankees organization from 2018-19 and the Marlins organization as its Triple-A hitting coach from 2021-22. He played parts of eight years in the Majors with the Red Sox, Padres, Astros, A's and Cardinals from 1990-97.

Thames and Plantier are both familiar with Angels manager Phil Nevin, as they all worked together in the Yankees organization when Nevin was New York's third-base coach from 2018-21.

Hezel comes from Driveline in Seattle, where he served as the director of pitching since 2020. He also was a pitching consultant for the Phillies from 2020-21. The Angels have had several of their pitchers work out at Driveline in the offseason in recent years, including two-way star Shohei Ohtani and left-hander Patrick Sandoval. He pitched at Lehigh University and East Stroudsburg University, graduating in 2010.

Notably, the Angels also decided to retain Wise as their pitching coach, as it was unclear if he’d be brought back. But the Angels did see an improvement with their pitching staff last year, finishing ninth in the Majors in ERA (3.77), while seeing the development of young lefties such as Reid Detmers, José Suarez and Sandoval. Wise was hired as the club's bullpen coach in 2020, but he became the club's pitching coach in '21 after Mickey Callaway was fired after being investigated by MLB for sexual harassment claims.
