ANAHEIM -- Michael Trout was limited to designated-hitter duties in his 1,000th career game on Thursday night, as he is dealing with a sprained right index finger that hampers the center fielder's ability to throw.
Trout walked three times and scored twice, continuing his torrid on-base stretch and helping the Angels to an 8-5 win. Over his last nine games, Trout is hitting .640 (16-for-25) with four home runs, nine RBIs, and 14 walks. During that span, he has reached base in 32 of his 42 plate appearances for a .756 on-base percentage.
Trout has been cleared to hit by the Angels and will be re-evaluated in a few days to determine whether he is ready to return to the outfield.

It wasn't the only injury news for the Angels, who also scratched left-hander Tyler Skaggs from his scheduled start against the Blue Jays because of right hamstring tightness. Left-hander John Lamb, who had been scheduled to pitch on Friday, started on Thursday in Skaggs' place on the standard four days' rest.
"Skaggs got a little tight hamstring and it bothered him for a couple days," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think he did it working out. We just want to err on the side of caution and get him to where he wouldn't be at risk. Hopefully in a couple more days we can look at it and see when he can get back out there to pitch."
Scioscia said left-hander Andrew Heaney will now pitch on Friday, with right-hander Jaime Barria starting on Saturday. Sunday's starter has yet to be determined, though Skaggs could return at that point if the Angels feel he's ready to pitch without restrictions. Skaggs is currently considered day to day.

Skaggs, 26, has been the Angels' best starter this season, posting a 2.81 ERA over 80 innings. He had been even more effective in June, going 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three starts. The Angels' rotation has been depleted by injuries, as Garrett Richards (left hamstring strain), Nick Tropeano (right shoulder inflammation), Shohei Ohtani (right UCL sprain), Matthew Shoemaker (right forearm strain) and JC Ramirez (Tommy John surgery) are already on the disabled list.
Richards continues to receive therapy and has resumed playing catch, but the Angels do not have a timetable for his return. Tropeano is expected to pick up a ball this weekend, according to Scioscia.
Hermosillo recalled
Chris Young avoided the DL after suffering a hamstring injury on Tuesday, but since he and Trout are banged up, the Angels recalled Michael Hermosillo from Triple-A Salt Lake to play center field in the interim. Hermosillo took the roster spot vacated by right-hander Jake Jewell, who was optioned following Tuesday night's game.
The Angels also announced that utility man Kaleb Cowart was reinstated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Injury updates: Cozart, Marte
• Zack Cozart (left shoulder subluxation) is "feeling much better," according to Scioscia, and has begun swinging off a tee.
• Jefry Marte (left wrist sprain) has been cleared to swing and has been working in the batting cage.
Moving on up
Right-hander Griffin Canning, the Angels' second-round Draft pick out of UCLA in 2017, has continued his quick ascent through the Angels' farm system, as the club announced Thursday that he's been promoted to Salt Lake. Canning, 22, has logged a 1.66 ERA over 54 1/3 innings between Class A Advanced Inland Empire and Double-A Mobile this season. He is ranked the Angels' No. 7 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
