Angels select INF Will Wilson with first pick (15th overall) in 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft

June 4th, 2019

The Angels selected INF Will Wilson out of North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC), as their first pick (1st round, 15th overall) in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Angels' Director, Scouting Matt Swanson.

Wilson, 20, finished his junior season at NC State batting .335 with 16 home runs, 57 RBI and .661 slugging percentage. He was named First Team All-ACC and tabbed as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year after making just six errors in the regular season. Wilson was also named one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award (given to the nation's top shortstop), the first NC State player to be named a finalist since Trea Turner in 2014. Across three seasons with the Wolfpack, the 6-0 ft., 185 lb. infielder posted a .313 (219/699) average with 39 home runs and 158 RBI.

The Kings Mountain, N.C. native becomes just the second college player selected by the Angels under General Manager Billy Eppler and first since Matt Thaiss (University of Virginia) in 2016. Last season the Angels selected Jordyn Adams out of Green Hope High School (Cary, NC) with the 17th overall selection. Wilson is the first collegiate infielder taken by the Angels in the first round since C.J. Cron (Utah) in 2011 and first shortstop taken by the Halos in the first round since Kaleb Cowart (Cook County HS) in 2010.

The Angels have held the 15th overall selection in the June draft on two previous occasions: and RHP Willie Fraser (1985 Draft) and LHP Sean Newcomb (2014 Draft).

The Angels active roster currently features six players who were first round selections, including five who were four round picks by the Halos: Cam Bedrosian (29th overall by Angels - 2010), Brian Goodwin (34th overall by Nationals - 2011), Andrew Heaney (9th overall by Marlins - 2012), Tyler Skaggs (40th overall by Angels - 2009), Mike Trout (25th overall by Angels - 2009) and Taylor Ward (26th overall by Angels - 2015).

Wilson is the first of two selections the Angels will make on the first day of the draft. The Halos also hold the 55th overall selection, which will come in the second round of the draft.

Following the second round of the draft, Angels Director, Scouting Matt Swanson will be available via conference call. An additional email with conference call information will be distributed following the Angels second round selection.
