Astros agree to terms with Carter and Corporan

Both players avoid arbitration

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with infielder/outfielder Chris Carter and catcher Carlos Corporan on one-year contracts for the 2015 season. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.

Carter, 28, hit 37 homers last year, which ranked tied for second in the Major Leagues and marked the most by an Astros player since 2006, when Lance Berkman hit 45. Carter's seven multi-homer games led the Majors and set an Astros franchise record, while his 88 RBI marked the most by a Houston player since 2011 (Carlos Lee). The right-handed hitter was named the American League Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 11-17, and over the past two seasons his 66 homers rank fifth in the Major Leagues. The 2014 season marked Carter's second with the Astros, as he was acquired from the A's in a five-player deal on Feb. 4, 2013.

Corporan, 31, has played with the Astros in each of the last four seasons, serving as Houston's primary backup catcher since 2013. In 198 total games with Houston, the switch-hitter has compiled 21 doubles, 17 homers and 63 RBI.

The Astros have five remaining players eligible for arbitration. Those players are infielder Marwin Gonzalez, catchers Jason Castro and Hank Conger, outfielder Dexter Fowler and left-handed pitcher Tony Sipp. Outfielder Alex Presley, who was eligible for arbitration this offseason, agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Astros on Nov. 18, 2014.
