Astros sign RHP Philip Humber

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right-handed pitcher Philip Humber, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today. Terms of the deal, which includes a club option for 2014, were not disclosed.

Humber, 29, was claimed off waivers earlier today from the Chicago White Sox. Humber, who starred at Rice University, became just the 21st pitcher in Major League history to hurl a perfect game with his 4-0 shutout vs. the Seattle Mariners on April 21 of this season.  He ended the season at 5-5 in 26 appearances for the White Sox (16 starts).

In 2011, Humber posted a 9-9 mark in a career-best 28 appearances (26 starts) for the White Sox with a 3.75 ERA.  In 80 career Major League appearances (44 starts), Humber is 16-15 with a 4.87 ERA (171ER/316.1IP).

Prior to his professional career, Humber, who resides in Tyler, TX, had an outstanding career at Rice University. He was a member of the Owls 2003 National Championship team, hurling a complete-game in the championship game vs. Stanford. Humber also earned First-Team All-America honors in 2004 and currently ranks second in school history in strikeouts and third in wins.

Humber was originally selected in the first round of the 2004 June Draft by the New York Mets. In addition to the Mets and White Sox, he has also had stints in the Major Leagues with the Twins and Royals.
