ARLINGTON -- Catcher Brian McCann was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list and reinserted into the Astros' lineup on Friday.
"You never want to go on the DL, but I was at the point where I needed to get it fixed, and I feel like I'm ready to go," McCann said before going 1-for-4 in a 7-3 win over the Rangers at Globe Life Park.
McCann had been sidelined since May 29 with right knee soreness. His return to the active roster bumped catcher Tim Federowicz, who was designated for assignment.
Manager AJ Hinch said he will ease McCann back into a regular routine, but he indicated that backup catcher Max Stassi, who even before McCann was hurt had performed well enough to merit more playing time, will continue to catch semi-regularly.
Stassi has been crushing left-handed pitching this year and can expect to see his name in the lineup much of the time the Astros are scheduled to face a southpaw. Entering Friday's game, Stassi was hitting .381 (16-for-42) against lefties.
Hinch said Stassi will catch on Saturday, when the Astros face Rangers lefty Mike Minor. They're facing another lefty on Sunday -- Matt Moore -- but Hinch hasn't determined who will be behind the plate for his club.
Hinch also said he's hopeful the Astros will be able to retain Federowicz. When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
"I hope he stays in the organization and continues to give us an option to bring him back to the big leagues as a Major League catcher," Hinch said. "To have someone with experience come and catch games when we needed it was very important."

Correa out, again
Shortstop Carlos Correa was not in the lineup for a second day in a row and he will continue to be evaluated as he recovers from right side soreness that forced an early exit from Sunday's game in Houston.
"I haven't given up that this series he won't make an appearance, but if he doesn't -- and we have a day off on Monday -- it's not a total failure," Hinch said. "We'll put him in there as soon as we feel comfortable that he's going to play with no restrictions."
Hinch is encouraged that Correa hasn't experienced any pain since Sunday, but he wants to be sure the pain doesn't come back when Correa's doing the most basic movements required of a ballplayer.
"The worst thing we can do is put him back in the lineup and have him play guarded, not swing 100 percent or not have the confidence if there's a swing and miss he's going to feel something," Hinch said.
"We'll do a battery of tests today, increase workload tomorrow. How that fits into Saturday and Sunday playing time will be determined as we go."
