Jose Altuve Named Astros Nominee for 2013 Roberto Clemente Award

Fans Can Vote for the National Award Recipient on and Register for a Chance to Win a Trip to the 2013 World Series; Pregame Ceremony Today

Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, today announced that Jose Altuve was named the Astros' 2013 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Today marks the 12th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Altuve is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Astros second baseman and Venezuelan native Jose Altuve has served as a tireless supporter and enthusiastic role model for at-risk children and teens in the Houston community through The Astros Foundation's two cornerstone programs- the Community Leaders program and the Astros Urban Youth Academy.

At new Community Leader park openings, Altuve personally congratulated hundreds of at-risk youth baseball and softball players for sticking with their studies and continuing to make healthy choices. His first visit was just days into the 2013 season, and Jose's enthusiasm for the work has never wavered.

In addition to graciously reaching out to inner-city kids, Altuve has also devoted his time and talents to teaching baseball to children and teens at the Astros Urban Youth Academy and offering his encouragement to those who are struggling on and off the field. He shares his good natured and respectful joy for life with everyone he meets and has a heart of a charitable champion.

Most recently, Altuve and four of his teammates participated in the team charity's first annual Dancing with the 'Stros charitable event.

Altuve will be honored in a pregame ceremony with Roberto Clemente, Jr., Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow and Chevrolet District Sales Manager Jason Ralph.

"Jose Altuve exemplifies what we're looking for in our Astros players, both in the way he plays on the field, and the way he conducts himself off of the field," said General Manager Jeff Luhnow. "His positive outlook, generous spirit and commitment to excellence make him an ideal candidate for this prestigious award."

Fans are encouraged to participate in the process of selecting the national award recipient by visiting to vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. Voting ends on Sunday, October 6th and participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2013 World Series, where the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet will be announced. The winner of the fan vote will receive one vote among those cast by the selection panel.
