CHICAGO -- George Springer's Tuesday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field went about as well as could have been expected -- outside of being activated off the disabled list. When he returns will be answered soon, according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch.
"Today was probably the best day we could have imagined," Hinch said. "This was the highest volume day we've been able to have for him. This is the best he's run since Spring Training, which is a good sign he's ready to go. Soon, given the workload today it wasn't going to be today, but soon."
Springer went through an intense workout Tuesday afternoon intended to get him winded, Hinch said, with the 27-year-old outfielder running the bases, stealing second base, and tracking fly balls and fungos. Springer, a first-time All-Star this season, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 28 with left quad discomfort.
Hinch said the club will check on Springer on Wednesday morning at the team hotel in Chicago to see how he's feeling and monitor him throughout the day before deciding if he should be activated. The Astros' starting right fielder was encouraged by his progress, but said he didn't know if an activation was looming.
"It went good. Really, really positive," Springer said. "We'll see what happens over the next couple days, but it was a very positive day. I'd like to play as soon as I can, but we'll see what happens."
Springer has posted a career-best .310 batting average and is two off his career-high with 27 homers to go with 66 RBIs and a .973 OPS in 93 games.

Worth noting
• All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa will likely begin swinging a bat and doing baseball activities during the team's trip to Arizona next week. It'll be the first time for Correa since undergoing surgery July 19 to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.
"There's still no target date," Hinch said. "But he's ahead of where he was expected, just based off of the healing and how the strength is coming back. The next challenge will be baseball activities and seeing how that progresses."
• Reliever Will Harris began a throwing program on Monday, playing catch at Minute Maid Park before throwing again Tuesday in Chicago. Harris was placed on the 10-day DL on July 30 with right shoulder inflammation. Hinch said he hopes to have Harris throw a couple of bullpen sessions during this road trip, and that a rehab assignment is likely.
"He's a little further behind, needs to do a lot of things before competition," Hinch said. "But just having two pain-free days is a good sign for us."
• Right-hander Lance McCullers played catch Monday in Houston but did not make the trip to Chicago with the club. He was placed on the DL on July 31 with back discomfort.
• Catcher Evan Gattis is still dealing with concussion symptoms and also didn't travel to Chicago. If Gattis' symptoms subside, he could join the club in Dallas, Hinch said.
• Relievers Tony Sipp and Michael Feliz played catch in Houston on Monday, but neither is with the club in Chicago. Sipp is dealing with right calf soreness, while Feliz is healing from right shoulder discomfort.
