Greinke Wins Rawlings Gold Glove Award

Pitcher named National League’s top defensive pitcher for sixth consecutive season

November 4th, 2019

Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. announced tonight that Astros RHP Zack Greinke has won a National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He officially wins it as a member of the Diamondbacks after spending his first four months of the season in Arizona. This marks the sixth consecutive season for Greinke to be named the top defensive pitcher in the National League, earning the honors for the Dodgers (2014-15) and the Diamondbacks (2016-19).

Astros 2B Jose Altuve, 3B Alex Bregman, 1B Yuli Gurriel and RF Josh Reddick were also finalists for AL Gold Glove Awards, but those positional awards were given to 2B Yolmer Sánchez, 1B Matt Olson, 3B Matt Chapman and RF Mookie Betts.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award was created in 1957, and since then the award has served as the highest symbol of defensive excellence in Major League Baseball. The winners are determined by combining votes from Major League managers and coaches with a sabermetric component.

Among pitchers, Greinke led the Majors in total chances (68), putouts (33) and double plays turned (12), while ranking tied for first in assists (34). His 12 double plays turned were by far the most in the Majors, besting RHP Mike Soroka, who ranked second with five. On the season, Greinke committed just one error in his 68 total chances for a .985 fielding percentage.

He was busy in the World Series, handling seven total chances with six assists and a putout. His six assists were the most by a pitcher in the World Series since RHP Greg Maddux had seven for the Braves in the 1996 Fall Classic. Five of those six assists for Greinke came in Game 7, marking a personal best for Greinke and the most in a single World Series Game since Maddux also had five in Game 2 of the 1996 World Series.

By winning a Gold Glove, Greinke is now eligible for the Rawlings Platinum Glove, which will be given to the top defender in each league, regardless of position. The winners will be selected via a combination of a national fan vote and the SABR Defensive Index.
