A's invite 5 top prospects to Spring Training

January 25th, 2021

Tyler Soderstrom and Nick Allen, two of the A's top prospects, will attend 2021 Spring Training.

Soderstrom and Allen were among a group of five non-roster invitees announced by Oakland on Monday, along with outfielder Buddy Reed and right-handers Brian Howard and Parker Dunshee. All five rank among the A's top 30 prospects.

Soderstrom is the A's No. 3 prospect. The 19-year-old left-handed-hitting catcher was Oakland's first-round Draft pick in 2020, selected 26th overall, and spent the season at Oakland's alternate training site.

Allen is the team's No. 4 prospect. The 22-year-old shortstop and second baseman, who's an excellent defensive infielder, was also at the alternate site in 2020 and hit .292 with three home runs and 13 stolen bases in 72 games at Class A Advanced Stockton in 2019.

The 25-year-old Reed, the A's No. 24 prospect, hit .228 with 14 home runs and 23 stolen bases in 121 games at Double-A while in the Padres organization in 2019 before the A's acquired him in the Jurickson Profar trade.

Howard, also 25, is a 6-foot-9 pitcher who's ranked as Oakland's No. 25 prospect. He went 8-9 with a 4.30 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings over 27 starts at Double-A and Triple-A in 2019.

The 25-year-old Dunshee, the A's No. 27 prospect, went 6-7 with a 4.36 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 130 innings over 26 games in 2019, also split between Double-A and Triple-A.
