A's option RHP Dan Straily to Sacramento; Place RHP Ryan Cook on the DL

The Oakland A's optioned right-handed pitcher Dan Straily to Triple-A Sacramento and placed right-handed pitcher Ryan Cook on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to yesterday with a muscle strain in his right forearm, the club announced today. To take their spots on the roster, the A's recalled right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez and left-handed pitcher Joe Savery from Sacramento.

Straily was 1-2 with a 4.93 ERA in seven starts with the A's. He issued 15 walks in 38.1 innings and is tied for the Major League lead with nine home runs allowed. Straily was 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA over his last five starts after going 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA over his first two starts.

Cook was 0-1 with a 2.92 ERA and .140 opponents batting average in 12 relief appearances before straining his right forearm in the 10^th inning of the first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday. He began the season on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis and was reinstated April 7. Cook logged a 0.96 ERA over his first nine appearances before allowing three runs in 3.0 innings over his last three outings.

Rodriguez began the season on the disabled list as he continued to recover from his March 27, 2013 "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow. He began a rehab assignment with Sacramento April 3 and appeared in eight games before he was reinstated from the DL and optioned to Sacramento April 29. The 29-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA in 11 relief appearances overall with the River Cats. Rodriguez held the opposition to a .217 batting average and did not surrender a home run in 12.1 innings. He did not allow a run over his final eight games and 9.1 innings. Rodriguez last pitched in a Major League game on Oct. 3, 2012 at Chicago for Houston.

Savery was 4-0 with a save and a 3.86 ERA in 10 relief appearances with the River Cats. He recorded the win in four consecutive relief appearances from April 11 to 25 and is tied for fourth in the Pacific Coast League in wins. The 28-year-old left-hander allowed a .319 batting average but had 14 strikeouts in 11.2 innings, an average of 10.80 per nine innings Savery was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia Feb. 17, 2014. He compiled a 3-2 record and a 4.15 ERA in 41 appearances in three seasons with the Phillies from 2011-13.
