OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's recalled right-handed pitchers Chris Bassitt and Carlos Ramirez from Triple-A Nashville, placed right-handed pitcher Santiago Casilla on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder and optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Lucas to Nashville, the club announced Saturday.
Bassitt joins the A's for the second time this year but has yet to pitch for Oakland. He was recalled on April 20 and optioned back to Nashville April 26. The 29-year-old right-hander had UCL reconstruction surgery on his right elbow on May 6, 2016 and has not pitched in the majors since April 28, 2016, a loss in a start at Detroit (3.2 ip, 10 h, 7 r, 7 er, 3 bb, 5 so). Bassitt is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA and .316 opponents batting average in eight games, including five starts, with Nashville. He logged a 0.69 ERA in three relief appearances before his first promotion to Oakland but is 1-2 with an 11.15 ERA in five starts since his option.
Ramirez was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays May 20. He began the year at Triple-A Buffalo where he went 0-1 with a save, a 5.40 ERA, .074 opponents batting average and eight walks in 8.1 innings in seven relief appearances. The 27-year-old right-hander also had a two-game stint with Toronto from April 29 to May 3 and had a 3.86 ERA, .125 opponents batting average and five walks in 2.1 innings. Ramirez was designated for assignment May 13 and claimed off waivers by Oakland and optioned to Nashville May 20. He pitched in one game for the Sounds on May 24 against Colorado Springs (2.0 ip, 3 so). Ramirez is 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA and .113 opponents batting average in 14 appearances over two seasons in the majors.
Casilla has a save and a 3.32 ERA in 16 relief appearances with Oakland. He has held the opposition to a .153 batting average, which is sixth lowest among American League relievers, but has walked 14 batters, which is tied for third most. This is his sixth career stint on the disabled list but his first since 2014.
Lucas is 0-0 with a 3.12 ERA and .241 opponents batting average in three games, including one start, over two stints with the A's this year. He was recalled most recently on May 18 and pitched 3.2 innings of relief that day at Toronto. Lucas also started on Thursday against Seattle and had a no decision, allowing two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings.
