The Oakland Athletics have signed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson to a one-year contract for the 2019 season. To make room on the Major League 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Last year Anderson, 31, made 17 appearances with the A's -- all starts -- tallying 47 strikeouts and a 4.48 ERA spanning 80 1/3 innings pitched. For his career, Anderson has a 4.09 ERA and 592 strikeouts in 821 1/3 innings including time with Oakland (2009-13), Colorado (2014), Los Angeles-NL (2015-16), Chicago-NL (2017), Toronto (2017) and Oakland again (2018).
Manaea, 27, returns to the 60-day injured list while recovering from September arthroscopic shoulder surgery. In 2018, Manaea went 12-9 with one complete game and a 3.59 ERA, including 108 strikeouts in 27 starts for Oakland. His 3.59 ERA is a career best, he tied a career high in wins (12 in 2017) and set a new high for innings (158 2/3 in 2017). At the time of his placement on the injured list, he was tied for second in the American League in games started, ninth in innings pitched and sixth in fewest walks per nine innings (1.79).
