Matt Chapman named Wilson Defensive Player of the Year

Oakland A's third baseman Matt Chapman has been named the overall Wilson Defensive Player of the Year. This is the first time an Athletics player has won this award.

Oakland A's third baseman Matt Chapman has been named the overall Wilson Defensive Player of the Year. This is the first time an Athletics player has won this award.
In his first full Major League season, Chapman, 25, led all Major Leaguers regardless of position in defensive runs saved (29). He led Major League third basemen in ultimate zone rating (10.9), total chances (484), assists (331), and zone rating (.853). He was tied for first in the American League in out of zone plays (61), second in putouts and third in double plays (37). Chapman, who won his first career Gold Glove last week, was named both the overall and third base Defensive Player of the Year.
The Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award recognizes the top defensive player at each position, as well as the top overall defensive player, and the top overall defensive team. Winners are determined by using a formula that combines traditional defensive stats with advanced metrics, as well as the data logged by Inside Edge.
