SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The A's and D-backs both started pitchers Tuesday afternoon that they have high hopes for this year, but the game belonged to the hitters as the A's collected 17 hits and slugged their way to a 21-13 win at Salt River Fields.
The D-backs jumped on Sonny Gray in the first, scoring five runs, three of which came on Ketel Marte's first homer of the spring.
Gray, who was making his second start of the spring, struggled with his command, walking four while allowing seven runs on five hits over two innings.
The A's got back into the game in the second off Shelby Miller, as they scored three runs thanks in part to RBIs from Marcus Semien and Jake Smolinski. Oakland tacked on another three runs in the third as Semien doubled home a pair of runs.
Semien finished up 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
Miller, who had pitched well in his first two outings of the spring, allowed six runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings. The D-backs had hoped to get Miller into the fourth, but at 57 pitches they had to take him out.
"The second and third innings, I just wasn't finishing two-strike pitches," Miller said.
The A's offense broke out for 11 runs in the sixth inning, with third baseman Matt Chapman, Oakland's No. 4 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, bookended the effort with RBIs, starting the scoring barrage with an RBI single and capping it with a bases-clearing triple to extend the A's lead to 19-10. The A's sent 15 men to the plate in the six-hit, five-walk inning.
"I thought we swung the bats really well," A's manager Bob Melvin said.
Jake Lamb had two hits and two RBIs, and has a hit in every game he has played this spring. He's batting .571 in Cactus League play.
