OAKLAND -- Trevor Cahill could return to the A's rotation this weekend.
The right-hander used all of his pitches in a 35-pitch bullpen session at the Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon, reporting no pain in his back. He's missed two starts because of discomfort in the rhomboid muscle.
"We'll see how he feels [Thursday]," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "If he feels good, then we'll probably slot him in some point in time over the weekend."
The A's have only one starter penciled in for their three-game series with the Twins that begins Friday. Right-hander Mike Fiers is scheduled to pitch Saturday, but it's unclear who will bookend the set. Oakland will likely use an opener for one of the games, and perhaps two, should Cahill be unable to go.
Worth noting
• Left-hander Sean Manaea underwent successful shoulder surgery on Wednesday. The A's are expected to break down the procedure at a later time, but early indications were that Manaea would be sidelined through 2019.
• The A's sent pitching prospect Logan Shore to the Tigers to complete the Fiers trade on Wednesday. They previously dealt another right-hander, Nolan Blackwood, to Detroit on Aug. 18.
Shore, who had been ranked by MLB Pipeline as Oakland's No. 14 prospect, was limited to 17 starts between Class A Advanced Stockton and Double-A Midland this season because of three stints on the disabled list. He was a second-round Draft pick of the A's in 2016.
