Frankie Montas named AL Player of the Week

OAKLAND, Calif. – A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 3-9. This is his first career Player of the Week award.

On Monday, Aug. 3, Montas held the Mariners to just one run on four hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work for his first win of the season. He followed that up by shutting out the Astros over 7.0 innings on Saturday, allowing only two hits and no walks with five strikeouts for his second win of the year. In total, Montas went 2-0 and allowed just one run, six hits, and four walks over 14.0 innings pitched, including 14 strikeouts.

For the season, Montas is 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in four starts spanning 23.0 innings pitched. He has allowed 14 hits and nine walks to go along with 22 strikeouts over that span. Among qualified American League pitchers, Montas ranks third this season in innings pitched, fourth in ERA, and tied for seventh in opponents batting average (.175).
