Oakland A's rename annual Pride Night after Glenn Burke

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s are celebrating the legacy of Glenn Burke, the first openly gay player in Major League Baseball and A’s alum, by renaming their annual Pride Night after him. The A’s will celebrate the Bay Area’s LGBTQ+ community with friends, families, and allies during Glenn Burke Pride Night at the Coliseum on Friday, June 11, when the team plays host to the Kansas City Royals at 6:40 p.m.

“Glenn Burke was a trailblazer, and we are excited and honored to recognize his legacy and impact on the game of baseball by naming our annual Pride Night after him,” said Oakland A’s President Dave Kaval. “Glenn Burke Pride Night will continue to be a time of celebration and inclusion at our ballpark as we come together with friends and allies.” 

Early arriving fans in attendance for Glenn Burke Pride Night will receive a Pride Rally Towel giveaway, presented by Gilead Sciences. Additionally, $10 from every Field Level ticket sold for that night’s game will be donated to the Glenn Burke Wellness Clinic at the Oakland LGBTQ Center. Before the start of the 6:40 p.m. game, members of the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco will sing the national anthem. Fans at the ballpark can also visit the A’s Community Corner, presented by Kaiser Permanente, at Section 218 to purchase special Pride flash sale items. Ahead of Glenn Burke Pride Night, Oakland LGBTQ Center co-founder and Executive Director Joe Hawkins will join the A’s Radio pregame show with Vince Cotroneo on Wednesday, June 9, to talk about LGBTQ+ Pride Month, the Oakland LGBTQ Center’s work, and the legacy of Glenn Burke. Fans can tune into the A’s Radio pregame show 30 minutes before first pitch.
