The Power to Heal

The power of sport can do incredible things. It can help foster reconciliation, healing, and a sense of belonging. This was the goal of Kenora Chiefs Advisory Rookie League, which brings together nine First Nation communities through their longstanding passion for baseball. In partnership with Jays Care, the program incorporates culture with a focus on intergenerational participation – whether as an athlete, volunteer, or fan – as the league gives Indigenous kids a safe space to build relationships and develop a sense of cultural pride.

After two challenging years during the pandemic, this sense of belonging was needed more than ever. By bringing communities back together, Indigenous children were able to reconnect, and revitalize their community spirit through play.
