TORONTO -- Aaron Sanchez is likely done for the season after he left the Blue Jays to have his problematic right middle finger examined by a hand specialist in California.
Sanchez left the Blue Jays on Sunday to undergo further tests, and it's unclear whether he will return to the club before the end of the week. Toronto's regular-season schedule wraps up on Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg vs. the Rays.
The 26-year-old has experienced a number of issues with his finger over the past two years. In 2017, it was a lingering blister and strained ligament that limited Sanchez to just 36 innings. This year, it was a freak accident with a piece of luggage that caused his finger to swell up and resulted in a two-month absence.
"He's frustrated because [the hand] doesn't seem to be getting any better and that's what frustrates him," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He doesn't know why, and it clearly has impacted his performance, there's no doubt."

Sanchez made five starts since coming off the 60-day disabled list, going 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA. He still didn't look like himself on the mound and there were ongoing issues with command, which at the time was attributed to rust. It turns out, he still wasn't completely healthy.
Right-hander Sean Reid-Foley will start in Sanchez's absence against the Astros in Wednesday's home regular-season finale. Reid-Foley was a possibility to be shut down after his last outing because of an innings limit, but the Blue Jays are expected to let him throw at least a couple of innings vs. Houston.
If he's indeed done for the season, Sanchez will finish the year 4-6 with a 4.89 ERA over 20 starts. The California native also struck out 86 and walked 58 in 105 innings.
"His finger was still bothering [him] to the point where he wanted to get it checked out again to make sure," Gibbons said. "He went and got checked out, a guy in California, I think. I don't know what the final results are. He's going to get another opinion."
